Fort Boyard
Classified as a historical monument, Fort Boyard was built in 1857, during the Napoleonic era. This emblematic fortification was then a military stronghold which had for role, the defense of the estuary of the Charente.
Like a ship of stone!
Built to defend the royal arsenal of Rochefort, the construction of Fort Boyard lasted 30 years, a real technical feat.
The boat trip around Fort Boyard is a must when you stay in Charente-Maritime. If the interior of the fort is forbidden to the public, its unusual architecture is well worth a visit.
Then board a tour boat for excursions that last between 2 and 4 hours, which will bring you closer to the Fort.
Access to the interior of the Fort is forbidden to the public, but the famous program that bears its name allowed us to discover its interior architecture. Walk to be combined with a stopover on the island of Aix.
