Citadel and walled city of the 13th century

Last step before crossing the estuary, Talmont-sur-Gironde is perched on its promontory that the sea is relentlessly eating away at.

15km south of Royan, Talmont, a small outgrowth of earth and rocks in the estuary, was built in 1284 on the plan of the medieval bastides.

Enter the magnificent church of Sainte-Radegonde whose architecture, sobriety and purity of the nave with its sculpted decoration, make it an essential jewel of the Romanesque art of Saintonge.

It is a pleasure to stroll through the alleys of this ancient walled city lined with hollyhocks. Numerous craftsmen, artists, painters, potters and stylists give life to these places full of history.
